Because you are reading this article, you obviously know that GSP is seriously ripped and probably has the best abs and probably body in the MMA. In order to get his ripped physique he doesn’t only train like a mad man, he also follows a special diet.
The George St-Pierre Diet Plan before his fights are super strict and have the following guidelines:
“I tend to eat as well as I can, but I use the diet to lose weight,” Georges St-Pierre says. “I weigh 185 pounds, and I have to be 170 on the scale [for the weigh-in], so in four days I’m going to lose 15 pounds. I’m gonna cut down the carbs, the sodium, and I’ll be eating a lot of greens and a lot of protein. By doing so, I’m going to restrict myself and make the weight. And after the weigh-in, I’m going to do the opposite by eating a lot of carbs and get all my weight back.”
This may seem very basic but it is a simple logical start for most people, personally I always like to follow more of a laid out plan and I had really good luck with was Eat Stop Eat by Brad Pilon, this program uses a method called intermittent fasting, which means you fast for 24 hours every 48 hours. This is a very easy to follow diet and it makes it easy to still go out and eat with your friends without changing your eating habits.
If you prefer a more traditional way of dieting and not fasting Jon Benson has created what he calls the Every Other Day Diet. His diet alternates high calorie days with low calorie days to mimic the way ancient cave man used to eat to be efficient hunters and gatherers. Lets face it Cavemen were in very good shape.
Another GSP diet secret is bananas! Read on and see what I’m talking about…
- Before the fight, GSP doesn’t eat any more carbohydrates.
- All he eats is meat and vegetables; vegetables are carbs, but our bodies don’t have the enzymes to break them down so they just pass through the system without being absorbed. So now you have no glycogen in your muscles and you’re also losing three parts of water. So that’s going to make you a lot lighter because, obviously, water is very heavy.
- The week [before the fight GSP is] losing maybe a quarter of a pound of fat, but the rest will all be water.
- After the weigh-in he’s going to absorb the water back and he’s going to eat carbohydrates right after.
Georges St-Pierre often eats a banana before or after a fight as well. “The reason he eats a banana is because when you go on low-carb diets, you lose a lot of potassium,” Firas Zahabi explains.
“When you eat carbohydrates, you get a high level of potassium, so when you’re not eating carbohydrates, you have no more potassium, and when you don’t have potassium you get acidity in your muscles.
So we give him bananas — bananas are high in potassium and sugar and, once he reaches his weight, we start giving him back high-potassium foods.”
